Wardrobes – Walkin Closet – Storage cabinets  - Amsterdam

Luxury wardrobes, walkin closets and fitted cabinetry in Amsterdam houses are increasingly popular. Most houses and appartments that are sold in Amsterdam are without any storage. On the one hand this is logical as some appartments are small and do not have much space. On the other it is totally illogical as good storage really pays off: the house is organized and free of items and actually you gain space. Besides the look of a good and nice wardrobe is luxurious and nice. Custom made design though is an absolute necessity in the often strangely divided appartments.

Custom made wardrobe projects

Besides the old houses and appartments here in Amsterdam the new houses and appartments are mostly made without any storage spaces. Mainly because in the Dutch design and building industry there is no tradition of fitted wardrobes and built in furniture. This in contradiction to the English speaking countries. We have a lot of expat clients from the UK, USA and Australia that truly are surprised with this situation. Hence we are designing a lot of built in and fitted storage cabinets and custom made furniture in Amsterdam, Den Haag and Het Gooi. Mostly they are combined projects with closed and open wardrobes and walkin closets.

Wardrobes with closed doors

The built in cabinets and wardrobes are designed in two main categories: closed with doors and open as a walk in closet. Both practical. The closed fitted cabinets are made and designed when positioned in a bedroom, guestroom or study room. The open wardrobes mostly come in separate rooms only made and designed for storage and dressing. The closed wardrobe cabinets here in Amsterdam we mainly design them with turning doors. Sliding systems and sliding doors take space and the outlook is not perfect as you will have huge gaps in the door system. In outlook and esthetics we find it more pretty to have opening doors on hinges. There are three models that are popular: the classic wardrobe with panel doors: they fit the old apartments and go with the classic details of for example the canal houses here in Amsterdam. The classic wardrobes are mostly finished with nice crownlists and plinths. The finish is sprayed or handpainted for some more structure in the paintwork.

Modern wardrobes come with flat fronts and doors. The doors open gripless with push to open systems or with special moulded in openings and grips. Two versions are sold regularly. The one version is a wardrobe with sprayed doors in a solid color. This version of wardrobe can also be handpainted. Colors can be chosen to your wish. The other versions have fronts and doors where you actually see the wood structure like oak of walnut, the outlook is just different. The choice for the model really depends on the apartment, taste and the rest of the interior. The finish of those models is either with oil, varnish or even spraypaint. In the last version there is a very light structure of the oak visible in the cabinet door.

Open and closed wardrobes combined

We make nice new models that combine nice open parts and closed parts. This to give a bit more of a playful outlook in style and the cabinets are more multifunctional. The closed parts are now combined with open parts in the form of a box or a total compartment of the wardrobes. The open space can be used as a showcase for objects to show or for books, as bookshelves. In the bedroom this comes in handy and functional. Also it is easy to integrate lights here like nice ledstrips.

Walkin closets

Walkin closets in Amsterdam are popular when the house has the right space and shape. Normally we design the walkin closets in separate rooms only used for dressing and storage. Also we create separate rooms to accommodate the walkin closet. In this case we split the room and use one of the backsides as a wall. Wardrobes like this models of walkin closets come in all variations: from simple to super luxuruous. In the simple versions we divide open spaces with hanging and shelving compartments and integrate drawers in the designs.

In the luxury versions we design open but also closed doors. In those luxury walk in closets we play with the materials for the open spaces: we make oak or colored/white insides and nice panel doors for some parts. Special features can be designed and integrated:

Drawers with display glass for ties and watches.

Special shoe cabinets and displays and pull out systems for shoes.

Special drawers for different purposes.

Display and slanted shelves for shoes or other accesoires.

Pull down systems for the hanging spaces.

Glass door so you have nice display cabinets for luxury bags etc.

In this way the walkin closet becomes a showcase for friends and famliy luxury accessory to the house in the nice old classic houses or modern appartments here in Amsterdam or The Hague in The Netherlands.

Inside divisions for the wardrobes

The insides for the wardrobes as well the walkin closets is to be designed in close cooperation with the client. Often the designer from MyHouse Amsterdam will make a proposition for the first draft of the wardrobe design. Then we simply count the meters shelving and hanging spaces needed and try to distribute the compartments needed in a nice and logical way.

Accesoires for your wardrobe

In a summary the following items are optional and can be integrated and have to be thought of when designing a perfect wardrobe and walkin closet.

  • Knobs and grips

Besides gripless opening doors knobs and handles can de mounted on the doors and drawers. We have a wide collection in luxury knobs in brass, metal stainless steel and nickel.

  • Pull down systems

Those systems (pentagram) make it possible to have very high hanging space in your wardrobe: you will incorporate a handle that pulls down the system. The weight of the clothes will make this process easy.

  • Drawers in the wardrobe or garderobe

Drawers are only chosen from very good systems like BLUM or Grass. The drawer system always come with soft closing or push to open systems. Special lengths can be chosen as well as special shoe or display drawers. Drawers can be also in the form of a pull out systems like used for kitchens.

  • Lights

In the wardrobes and walking closets here in Amsterdam and Holland we can integrate lights. Simple ledspots or halogen spots can be well integrated: it is nice to have it dimmable. The same applies for ledstrips that can be integrated in the shelves in a recessed way so they give atmospheric light. Lights can be connected to the main switch, remote control or with sensors on the doors.

  • Mirrors

Mirrors are nice to integrate on the door fronts or on the inside of the doors. We can also make separate mirrors to integrate with the total project.

  • Benches and upholstery

In your luxury designed wardrobe and walkin closet it is necessary that you can sit in order to dress properly. We make often benches with drawers underneath. The bench can be upholstered with nice fabric of choice.

  • Shoe cabinets

Separate custom made shoe cabinets come in various options. Drawers are popular in the wardrobes. Besides we use strong pull-out units with strong wooden or oak shelves. We can make the insides of cabinets slanted so your shoes do not take too much space.

  • Sliding doors and special hinges

Wardrobes with sliding doors are possible to integrate insead of normal turning and opening doors. Also we accommodate special hinges that open 170 degrees.

Design and process for custom made wardrobes

Custom made wardrobe, a fitted storage cabinet or a special walkin closet? How does it work? It is simple. The first contact will be giving us the sizes and images of your space and the style you like. Good measures are nice otherwise we will contact you to take measures ourselves. Then we will have an intake so we can get ideas of your design wishes, your taste and your interior and lifestyle. Based on this input you will receive a price offer for the wardrobe or walkin closet. After that we will make beautiful 3D visuals and designs. In this way you will see a realistic visual of your situation. Based on this you make choices for the design of your custom made wardrobe, garderobe and walkin closet.

After the choices for the style are made we make 2D AutoCad designs that give a good view on the insides, divisions and real measures and spaces. The AutoCads will have crosscuts and detail drawings of wood profiles and drawers.

The installation time of a wardrobe or walkin closet really depends on the size and complexity of the project. We work in teams of 2 or 3 installators per project. In big projects we will have two teams to make the fitting and building in of your bedroom, wardrobe, walkin closet or garderobe a nice and easy process.

We can imagine that you have style and other questions about your wardrobe project. Please do not hesitate to call one of our designers for a personal advice here at MyHouse Amsterdam. www.myhouse-amsterdam.nl
