Bespoke classical Bookcase in Hague Blue - Amsterdam

Bespoke bookshelves bring somtehing undeniably timeless in the fusion of classic craftsmanship and rich, bold colour. In a recent project in Amsterdam, we brought this harmony to life through a bespoke Shaker-style bookcase and dresser, meticulously crafted and hand-painted in the iconic Hague Blue by Farrow & Ball. Set within an elegant side room, this installation doesn’t just store books—it tells a warm story. A story of nostalgy, art and handcrafted traditions in furniture building. Both art enhances our arhcitectural design as much as the furniture enhances the art.

A Showcase for Art

This isn't your ordinary bookcase. Designed not only for books but also as a showcase for art, the shelving brings purpose and character to the room. Sculptures, ceramics, and curated objects sit in dialogue with carefully chosen titles, each shelf becoming a curated vignette. Integrated lighting highlights key pieces, casting soft shadows and adding depth to both the art and the furniture itself.

Designed with Purpose

Every detail of the piece was custom-designed upfront. Working closely with the client, we explored proportions, layout, and intended use. The result? A wall-to-wall unit that feels both grounded and refined, fitting seamlessly into the room's architectural rhythm. It’s not just furniture—it’s a structural element that shapes the entire space.

Crafted in the Classical Shaker Tradition

Built in the Shaker tradition, the bookcase and dresser feature clean lines, inset panels, and classic joinery. This approach honours a style known for its quiet sophistication and functionality—perfectly at home in both period properties and modern reinterpretations.

The Power of Hague Blue

Choosing Hague Blue was a deliberate and powerful design decision. This deep, dark navy from Farrow & Ball carries subtle green undertones, shifting mood with the light and time of day. It brings drama without overwhelming, grounding the space and providing a rich backdrop for the objects on display.

Setting the Scene: Classical Wall Panelling

To complement the cabinetry, the surrounding walls were filled with classical wall panelling, echoing the traditional millwork and reinforcing the sense of architectural integrity. The panels frame the bookcase like a picture frame around a painting—subtle, but essential.

A Statement of Stillness and Strength

This bespoke bookcase and dresser in Hague Blue is more than just functional—it’s a statement piece. It brings together artistry, craftsmanship, and intelligent design, offering both storage and soul. Set within a paneled side room, it invites quiet appreciation, not just of books and art, but of the space itself.

How to design and order a bespoke bookcase in Amsterdam?

It starts with an idea and inspiration. Feel free to email us your ideas together with sizes and a picture of the space. We will answer you with a price and design idea. If we need more information we will visit your home to discuss the ideas. In the next stage we will set up realistic color 3D designs so we can finalise the project. After the 3D designs we set up technical and architetectural designs and we will place everything in production.

What materials are suitable for a bespoke bookcase?

Allthought MDF is an option, we advice the bookshelves to be made in solid wood. This is better to work with if you like more panelled and profiled wood elements. Besides it is the most durable and easier to repair in  case of damage.
